The 19th African Film Festival brings the latest in African filmmaking to Washington University and Saint Louis.  Witness diverse genres and cultures as you experience compelling images and cinematography from a variety of African countries.  The event is free and golf carts are available from the East End Garage.

Saturday's evening screenings include The Incredible Sensational Fiancee of Dr. Seyi Ajayi (Nigeria, 17 minutes) and Demba (Senegal, 119 minutes). Post-show discussion with Abbesi Akhamie (director, The Incredible...) and Maba Ba (producer, Demba) immediately following the screening moderated by award-winning filmmaker Ekwa Msangi.

Ekwa Msangi is Ekwa Msangi is a Tanzanian and American filmmaker whose award-winning and critically acclaimed feature film Farewell Amor premiered in competition at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Msangi has written and directed for both television and film, and along her journey has been awarded the NYWIFT Director’s Award, the 2020 Durban International Film Festival award for Best Screenplay, and was named a 2020 Sundance Momentum Fellow as well as a 2020 BAFTA Breakthrough.

Abbesi Akhamie is a writer, director, and producer currently based in New York City. She was born in Heidelberg, Germany and is of Nigerian descent. She is the award-winning writer/director of Still Water Runs Deep and The Couple Next Door.

Maba Ba is a Senegalese-born filmmaker, actor, and producer. His journey into storytelling began in his youth, entertaining family with tales during power outages in Senegal. Ba has contributed to several critically acclaimed projects, including the interactive series #WarGames and the award-winning short film Samedi Cinema, which premiered at prestigious festivals like TIFF and Venice. Through his company, JoyeDidi, Ba continues to champion African narratives on the global stage while also expanding into entrepreneurship with ventures like his Flying Whale wine brand.
