Though federal politics often dominate the news, local government works on policy decisions that have major impacts on residents’ daily lives. Issues like public health, transportation, education, sanitation, and more are shaped by elected and appointed government officials at the local level. For each social issue you care about, there’s likely a local-level policy that impacts the issue, and a local-level way to advocate for change!

The St. Louis region includes several counties, and even more municipalities, each of which has different populations and priorities. WashU’s Danforth campus sits on the border between St. Louis County and St. Louis City. St. Louis County alone includes 88 municipalities, and students cross into different municipalities – each of which has its own laws and governing structure – every day. Understanding the communities where we live helps us connect with the people who make up our community while becoming more informed students and citizens.

At this week’s Civic Cafe about local government in St. Louis County, we are honored to be joined by a panel of Mayors in St. Louis County. Please join us on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 5:30–7 p.m. to hear Mayor Sidney Clark of Olivette and Mayor Laura Arnold of Webster Groves share the varying needs and experiences of the communities they represent, how they collaborate to create change, and how we can become more engaged in our local communities.

Civic Café is a weekly discussion series hosted Wednesdays evenings at Stix House, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Students are invited to share a meal together and learn about civic topics from a community or campus expert. Graduate and undergraduate students of every discipline are invited to attend. Learn, eat and meet other civically-minded individuals.
