On May 16, 2025, a devastating EF3 tornado hit the St. Louis region. Several communities suffered severe impacts of the storm, the path of which is traced from Richmond Heights through Skinker DeBaliviere, north to O’Fallon Park and to Edwardsville on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River.

For many of you, the tornado has left a deep impact.  Others may just be joining or returning to the St. Louis community and witnessing firsthand its impact. To help our WashU community better understand the disaster and become engaged in recovery efforts in sustainable and thoughtful ways, we invite you to share a meal and hear about the opportunities and challenges of St. Louis’s ongoing tornado recovery efforts from Julian Nicks, Chief Recovery and Neighborhood Transformation Officer for the City of St. Louis; Constance Siu, Executive Director of the North Newstead Association; and Sebastian de los Santos, Deputy Divisional Emergency Disaster Services Director for the Salvation Army.

Disaster recovery is one of the most powerful forms of civic engagement, where compassion meets action. When disasters strike, people from all walks of life come together to provide aid, shelter, and support. Ordinary people can do simple things to rebuild their communities and uplift their neighbors, one act at a time.
