DESCRIPTION:Dr. Yuan Yang\, Associate Professor of Materials Science and En
gineering in the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics\n\n
Lithium metal batteries are attractive for next-generation energy storage
since lithium metal anode can store 10 times more capacity per mass than s
tate-of-the-art graphite anodes. However\, its application in energy stora
ge is impeded by numerous problems\, such as safety and side reactions. Ad
dressing these problems requires fundamental understanding and material de
signing. In this talk\, I will present our recent studies on understanding
and designing high-energy-density lithium metal batteries. We utilized ad
vanced Stimulated Raman Scattering Microscopy to understand ion transport
in battery electrolytes and its interaction with electrode materials. Part
icularly\, by inducing phase transformation at the lithium/electrolyte int
erface\, new strategies to suppress lithium dendrite growth are developed.
I will also show how tuning electrolyte composition helps enhance the per
formance of anode-free lithium metal batteries and cathode designs in high
 -energy-density lithium-sulfur batteries.\n\nHosted by: Dr. Sang-Hoon Bae
