hang Endowed Lectureship at WashU\, “The Affective Security Dilemma? T:
Fear and Anger in U.S.–China Relations” explores U.S.–China competit
ion is commonly interpreted through the lenses of the security dilemma and
securitization theory. This talk foregrounds the affective foundations of
these frameworks by examining how fear and anger are generated\, transmit
ted\, and diffused across national boundaries and emotional domains. Using
computational methods\, we analyze a large-scale corpus of U.S. and Chine
se news content on social media. The findings reveal systematic patterns t
hat form a layered affective system that sustains and amplifies rivalry be
yond material signaling. Building on this\, complex systems theory and mac
hine learning can be used to model and simulate the system and explore pot
 ential interventions.
