Sponsored by the McDonnell Academy Cabot-Zhang Endowed Lectureship at WashU, “The Affective Security Dilemma? T: Fear and Anger in U.S.–China Relations” explores U.S.–China competition is commonly interpreted through the lenses of the security dilemma and securitization theory. This talk foregrounds the affective foundations of these frameworks by examining how fear and anger are generated, transmitted, and diffused across national boundaries and emotional domains. Using computational methods, we analyze a large-scale corpus of U.S. and Chinese news content on social media. The findings reveal systematic patterns that form a layered affective system that sustains and amplifies rivalry beyond material signaling. Building on this, complex systems theory and machine learning can be used to model and simulate the system and explore potential interventions.
